This year too, October is colored pink for initiatives dedicated to the prevention of breast cancer. Even today, this neoplasm is the most frequent tumor in women in all age groups, as well as the first cause of cancer mortality in women. Secondary prevention, or the search for tumors in early stages, allows for optimizing treatments and significantly improving the outcome of patients affected by this very frequent disease. In fact, with the introduction of mammographic screening, which is offered systematically to women between the ages of 45 and 69, and extended up to 75 years in patients who join, overall survival has increased substantially. But we cannot stop there. There is still a portion of patients with advanced, recurrent or metastatic disease who fight every day to improve their quantity and quality of life.
Anche quest’anno ottobre si tinge di rosa per le iniziative dedicate alla prevenzione del tumore al seno. Ancora oggi questa neoplasia rappresenta il tumore più frequente nel sesso femminile in tutte le fasce di età, nonchè la prima causa di mortalità per tumore nelle donne. La prevenzione secondaria, ovvero la ricerca del tumore in stadio precoce, consente di ottimizzare le cure e migliorare significativamente l’outcome delle pazienti affette da questa malattia così frequente. Di fatto, con l’introduzione dello screening mammografico, che viene offerto in maniera sistematica alle donne di età compresa tra 45 e 69 anni, e protratto fino ai 75 anni nelle pazienti che aderiscono, la sopravvivenza globale è aumentata in maniera sostanziale. Ma non ci si può fermare qui. Esiste comunque una porzione di pazienti con malattia avanzata, recidiva o metastatica che lottano tutti i giorni per migliorare la loro quantità e qualità della vita.
